How can I afford to send my child with a disability to college?

Scholarships for People with Disabilities

There are many scholarships for people with disabilities. Parents may not be able to afford to send their children with disabilities to a good college because of the amount of money used to provide proper medical care for these children. These scholarships can allow a child with a disability to fulfill his or her dream of attending college.

Some scholarships are small, such as the 1-800-Wheelchair Scholarship Fund, and some can be quite large—such as the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Scholarship--giving a person with a disability up to $10,000 to attend school.

Some programs offer help in paying for education in exchange for service. One such program is AmeriCorps—they will help pay for education in exchange for a year of service. This can benefit a person with a disability in that the person not only gets an education, but she or he also gets hand-on training, which is just as important as the college education.
